The quick action of emergency responders as well as Paratroopers waiting to board aircraft saved more lives.
Major General William M. Steele, Division Commander at the time said: "it was Soldiers saving Soldiers. Soldiers putting out fires on other Soldiers, dragging Soldiers out of fires.
Anything they could do to care for their buddies that were more injured they were doing. They responded the way they would in combat."
The 24 Paratroopers killed that day are forever honored on our Combat Training Memorial.
